liquidcitrus The difference between a Motion and a Binding is weird and unclear, but here's some more discussion, and examples, that might help disambiguate the two.
A Motion is a Domain miracle. It puts your same Estate, and your same Properties, in a different context. This new transplanted instance interacts with the world, and is in turn interacted with, in the same way. But these new surroundings can make it possible to experience your Estate in places that were not previously hospitable to such interaction.
- After a Lesser Motion of Parrots, some parrots ended up in the ocean. They are now parrotfish. They still have beaks and are herbivores. It's just that, instead of cracking nuts with their beaks, they crack coral. Also, they are in the ocean, so you have to go diving or visit an aquarium to see them now.
- A Noble uses a Lesser Motion of Snow to create hot snow. This results in volcanic ash. Volcanic ash in sufficient quantities still falls from the sky in flakes, collects in drifts, must be cleared from the roads, and closes schools due to bad weather conditions. But this happens in places where snow might never otherwise fall.
- Casting a Lesser Motion of Dating puts someone's dating life on display in a reality television show. The dating still occurs, and it still has the same aim of trying to find someone to hook up with, but the manipulative editing turns everyone else's view of an ordinary, messy human process into larger-than-life drama. (To be fair, dating often feels like a larger-than-life drama, especially to teenagers. But details.) Now that it is on TV, though, everyone else can see it too.
- A Greater Motion of Haggling creates couponing. When you haggle, you pay with something that is worth more to them and less to you, argue that something is worth less because of its insufficiencies or blemishes, get lower prices by buying more of their things, and come away satisfied. It is just that, in couponing, your points of leverage are pieces of paper with barcodes, you find things that are blemished by going to the clearance rack, your volume discounts are two-for-one sales, and you can take gleeful pictures of your heavily discounted receipts for your blog. Also, you can do couponing in supermarkets and department stores that would laugh you out if you tried to argue prices with the manager directly.
A Binding is based on Persona. It changes how people relate to your Estate. It retains its own substance, but now it interacts with the world, and is interacted with, in different ways.
- Because of a Lesser Binding of Dolphins, a military force that shall remain unnamed trained a pod of dolphins to sweep for mines. This gave the dolphins a new job to do - and presumably, if an enemy figured out the military was using dolphins, they would start targeting the dolphins. (The program in question has since been discontinued. Please do not shoot dolphins in case they are working for the enemy.)
- A Lesser Binding of Grains creates wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass juice comes from the sprouts off wheat seeds, so it's still wheat. But instead of being the basis for a staple food like bread, it is now a weird-tasting juice that people pay a lot to put in their smoothies.
- A Greater Binding of Definitions turns a definitional argument into a meme. Suddenly everyone has an opinion on whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich. It's still the same definitional question, but now it's party chatter and talk show fodder.
